The Speaker extended a welcome to the President of the Senate and Senators as guests.

The Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Mark Carney, was announced.

The Speaker welcomed Prime Minister Carney.

Mr Albanese (Prime Minister) welcomed Prime Minister Carney.

Mr Taylor (Leader of the Opposition) supported the remarks of the Prime Minister.

The Speaker invited Prime Minister Carney to address the meeting.

Prime Minister Carney then addressed the meeting.

The Speaker, on behalf of the House, expressed thanks to Prime Minister Carney.

Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Reporting System Reform) Bill 2026 —REPORT FROM FEDERATION CHAMBER

The Deputy Speaker reported that the Federation Chamber had been unable to complete its consideration of the bill and had returned the bill with an unresolved question ( see item No. 4, Minutes of Proceedings of the Federation Chamber, 4 March 2026 ), and presented a certified copy of the bill together with a schedule of the unresolved question.

Farrer ELECTORAL DIVISION—ISSUE OF WRIT

The Speaker informed the House that it was his intention to issue a writ on Wednesday, 1 April 2026 for the election of a Member to serve for the electoral division of Farrer, in the State of New South Wales, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Sussan Ley. The dates in connection with the by-election would be fixed as follows:

Close of rolls.......................... Wednesday, 8 April 2026.

Close of nominations............... Monday, 13 April 2026.

Date of polling........................ Saturday, 9 May 2026.

Return of writ......................... On or before Friday, 10 July 2026.

DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE— Cost of living

The House was informed that Mr T Wilson had proposed that a definite matter of public importance be submitted to the House for discussion, namely, “The decline of Australia’s living standards during the Government’s cost of living crisis”.

The proposed discussion having received the necessary support—
