The following message was delivered by the Usher of the Black Rod:

Honourable Members,

The Deputy of Her Excellency the Governor-General desires your attendance in the Senate.

Accordingly Members of the House of Representatives went to the Senate Chamber, where the Deputy addressed the Members of both Houses as follows:

ELECTION OF SPEAKER

Ms J Ryan, addressing herself to the Clerk, proposed to the House for its Speaker Mr Dick, and moved—That he do take the Chair of this House as Speaker, which motion was seconded by Mr McCormack.

Mr Dick informed the House that he accepted nomination.

There being no further proposal Mr Dick was declared elected as Speaker, and Ms J Ryan and Mr McCormack conducted him to the Chair.

Mr Dick returned his acknowledgments to the House for the honour it had been pleased to confer upon him by choosing him to be its Speaker, and thereupon sat down in the Chair.

Then the Mace, which before lay under the Table, was laid upon the Table.

Mr Albanese (Prime Minister), Ms Ley (Leader of the Opposition), Mr Littleproud (Leader of The Nationals), Dr Haines, Mr Hawke (Manager of Opposition Business) and Mr Katter congratulated the Speaker, who expressed his thanks.

PRESENTATION OF THE SPEAKER

Mr Albanese (Prime Minister) stated that he had ascertained it would be Her Excellency the Governor‑General’s pleasure to receive the Speaker in the Members’ Hall following the resumption of the sitting at 2.40 pm.

And the sitting of the House having been suspended at 12.12 pm until 2.40 pm—

The Speaker reported that he had presented himself to Her Excellency the Governor-General as the choice of the House of Representatives as its Speaker and that Her Excellency had been kind enough to congratulate him.

ELECTION OF DEPUTY SPEAKER AND SECOND DEPUTY SPEAKER

Ms Templeman moved—That Ms Claydon be elected Deputy Speaker of this House, which motion was seconded by Mr Watts.

Mr Wallace moved—That Mr Young be elected Deputy Speaker of this House, which motion was seconded by Mr Pike.

There being no further proposal—

The House proceeded to ballot, and the ballot being concluded, the Speaker reported the result, as follows:
